Rosemary Laing’s photographs reflect on our natural and cultural environments and their sometimes disquieting relationship. Drawn from two separate series, the works in this exhibition describe weather as a phenomenon arising from human rather than purely meteorological activity.
No landscape is visible in weather (2006), but a female figure is tossed about by a maelstrom of shredded newspapers, a metaphorical storm created by the confusing whirl of information and hype, fact and opinion, that makes up our daily news. In The Paper (2013), sheets of newspaper cover the floor of a Casuarina forest, like a pale carpet or shroud, suggesting a mysterious yet distinctly human-made weather event.
As allegories of human agency within the natural world, Laing’s enigmatic images remind us that what is required is a change in this metaphorical ‘weather’—in our attitudes, actions, policies—if the challenge of global warming is to be effectively met.
